Yesterday, I met with a good friend of mine who is an intern in a nearby hospital. Actually, she already passed her internship and is just trying to choose on which medical field to specialize in. She has plenty to choose from: surgery, pediatrics, ob-gyne, general medicine, and internal medicine. When we talked about her choices, I realize that even though she really wanted to help others by being a doctor, she still value quality time with her family. So I helped her choose by weighing the pro’s and con’s of each specialization.
If she becomes a surgeon, it’s a very big responsibility and she is not really into getting into other people’s guts. If she chooses to become an OB or a pediatrician perhaps, it will be a life long career because she must take care of the mother from pregnancy until the child becomes older. General medicine is an option but according to her, it is not so specialized.
I have noticed that there is one specialization that was not on her list of choices. I said “why don’t you just specialize in dermatology?”. This way you just treat non-emergency cases like allergies, acne, and stuff like that. It is easier to just prescribe an acne treatment to someone and she does not need to be on-call for that. She did not realize that so she was happy that I suggested it. She said that it was a very good option for her and she will really consider it.
