Today I learned that the social security is not really into helping the needy (or is too lazy to help). It’s about a friend of mine who used to work in a call center company. After being employed for two years, she experienced pain in the hands up to the shoulders. She described it as having cramps in every finger in her right hand. It turned out that it was “carpal tunnel syndrome”, a disorder common to those who use the hands and arms in a repetitive movement like clicking a mouse or strumming a guitar. Unfortunately, her condition is in the advanced stage and it will require surgery, a procedure requiring months of rest.

She applied for a two month recovery leave in her company for the surgery. Her considerate boss approved her leave of absence so her only problem now is the compensation. So she applied for temporary disability because she will not be able to work. Unfortunately, Social security did not consider her condition as being disabled. She became depressed and at the same time in pain because of her situation.

She talked to her company lawyer and asked for help regarding her disability application. The lawyer advised her to apply for a disability appeal to know the specific reasons why her application was denied. I felt very sorry for my friend upon hearing this news. I just hope everything goes out well for her.
