Most of us are probably using compact fluorescent (CF) bulbs at the office or at home. Probably because they are cheaper and less energy consuming than the old pear shaped light bulbs we used before. They give out a white light which is preferred than the yellowish light of the old bulbs and are always advertised as “eco-friendly”… but are they really?

Well, that is part true in terms of energy efficiency. CF bulbs do use less electricity yet give the same amount of light than their incandescent counterparts. In terms of disposal, the eco-friendly term may not be applicable. You see, the old light bulbs are made of glass and metal – which can be easily recycled and reused. CF bulbs in the other hand are made of glass, metal, PLASTIC, SILICONE, and other toxic chemicals like phosphor and lead – when disposed of, the non recyclable parts will just be piled up in the dumpsite which is not good for the environment.

In my opinion incandescent bulbs are great especially during winter season. They may consume much energy but they give of more than just light – also heat. This makes them excellent sources of heat during the cold nights. As for CF bulbs, manufacturers must find other materials which are “eco-friendly” before adding eco friendly stickers to their products.
